While the world obsesses over OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude, Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, comes up with a unique and rather useful suggestion at this time of the year – use Grok for doing your taxes. The AI chatbot developed by xAI, which was recently in controversy for generating obscene content with its latest Grok Imagine, is now endorsed by Musk to take care of your taxes.
In a repost on X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote: “Try using @Grok for your taxes!” Musk’s endorsement comes just hours after a highly viral post from a user appears to have inspired the spotlight. Deep-learning engineer @jamesdouma posted: “.@grok just saved my sister $1,441 on her taxes. I had it check the turbotax output and it found a mistake. Seriously – 4.20 is very good with taxes.”
The post arrives as millions of Americans gear up for the 2026 tax filing season, with the April 15 deadline approaching. Musk’s suggestion encourages using advanced AI chatbots to simplify what is often a stressful and complex annual task.
Grok positions itself as a helper with your tax filing
Similar to many LLMs, Grok is built as a generalist assistant capable of walking users through tax concepts step by step. Users can ask for clarifications on IRS rules, estimate refunds, optimise deductions, or even simulate “what-if” scenarios for investments and business expenses. Musk’s casual endorsement only helps with xAI’s goal of making Grok a practical daily tool rather than a niche product.
With tax software giants like TurboTax and H&R Block already integrating AI features, Musk is positioning Grok as a free, conversational, and easy-to-use alternative that doesn’t require paid subscriptions for basic assistance.
Grok responds to tax revision claims
Grok’s social media handle responded eagerly to Musk, stating, “Glad I could help catch that TurboTax slip-up! Fire away with your tax questions—I’ll audit faster than a CPA and spot savings you didn’t know existed. What’s your first deduction to check?”
Musk’s endorsement comes at a time when there’s intensifying competition in the consumer AI space. A couple of days earlier, AI coding startup Cursor clarified that its specialised model would deliberately avoid tasks like tax preparation to focus exclusively on software development. Musk’s counter-message highlights that Grok is more of a broader utility tool rather than one that specifically focuses on coding or a singular tool.
However, while AI tools can always help with tax filing advice and calculations, industry experts suggest relying on these only for advice and suggestions. Grok cannot replace professional tax advisors or certified accountants for complex filings.
