The Apple Watch Series 9 Double Tap feature is now available to users with the new watchOS 10.1 beta update. This new feature allows users to tap their index finger and thumb together twice to perform a variety of actions on their watch without having to touch the screen for compatible apps.

To use the Double Tap feature, users simply need to double-tap their watch hand with their index finger and thumb. For example, if you’re using it with your music app, Double Tap can be used to play or pause music, or skip to the next track, or go back to the previous track. Basically, it’s a great way to control your Apple Watch without having to touch the screen or smudging the watch especially when your hands are wet or dirty.

With a new double tap gesture, users can easily control Apple Watch Series 9 using just one hand and without touching the display. Users can tap the index finger and thumb of their watch hand together twice to quickly and conveniently perform many of the most common actions on Apple Watch Series 9,” says Apple.

The “Double Tap” is a gesture or action that serves as a primary control mechanism in various applications and functions across Apple devices, particularly the Apple Watch. This gesture can be used for multiple purposes, including Timer control, music playback, alarm snooze, phone call control, Camera Remote, accessing Smart Stack navigation, Widget navigation and more.

Double tap gesture is enabled by the faster Neural Engine in Apple Watch Series 9, which processes data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and optical heart sensor with a new machine learning algorithm. It detects the unique signature of tiny wrist movements and changes in blood flow when the index finger and thumb perform a double tap.
