Amidst the race of adopting AI, Amazon, the multinational tech company seems to be working on a new artificial intelligence chatbot. The proposed chatbot ‘Metis’ will be using  retrieval-augmented generation to provide up-to-date information and automate tasks.

Metis is being manufactured to deliver text and image-based answers in a conversational manner. It is also expected to have the power to share links to source responses, suggest follow-up queries and generate images.

Amazon to compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT?

According to Business Insider, Amazon is eyeing competing with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Reportedly, the proposed chatbot ‘Metis’ will be powered by an internal Amazon AI model called Olympus. It looks like Olympus is a more powerful model than Amazon’s currently available Titan AI model.

The goal of bringing Metis into the market is to generate more up-to-date responses and a more conversational AI assistant experience, Business Insider explained.

Additionally, the chatbot is expected to have the capability to provide real-time stock prices and function as an AI agent. This will eventually enable you to automate and execute complex tasks based on existing data. An AI agent can work autonomously to call out information by analysing data, making decisions and taking multiple actions based on programmed algorithms and learned patterns.

The way ahead with Metis

If the proposed AI chatbot ‘Metis’ gets launched, it seems that Amazon can make an entry into the ever-growing list of tech companies offering new AI assistants, including Microsoft, Google and Apple, among others.

Early incidents show that Amazon has been previously seen falling behind in the AI race. Reportedly, the claim was made by the Amazon founder and former Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos last month. The founder and former CEO is expected to have been emailing Amazon executives asking why more AI firms aren’t using its cloud services, according to an unnamed source who spoke to CNBC.

Since last year Amazon is believed to have been trying to demonstrate momentum in generative AI in Amazon Web Services and its overall business. Maybe Amazon is looking to remove  the perception of ‘falling behind in the AI technology race.’ After Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is Amazon’s cloud service unit, saw about hundreds of layoffs last month, it looks like the proposed ‘Metis’ can be a turning point for the multinational tech giant.

However, Amazon has not announced anything so far, speculations are Amazon AI might come out in a few months. The launch date has reportedly been scheduled for September.
