Getting a computer science degree from a top university is no longer a guarantee of a high-paying tech job. According to Xiaoyin Qu, a former manager at Meta, even graduates from Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology are finding it hard to secure roles in today’s market.
Qu shared her thoughts on X, saying that the hiring landscape has changed quickly because of artificial intelligence. In the past, students from top universities were heavily recruited by big tech companies. Many received multiple job offers before graduating. That situation, she says, is very different today.
AI is changing hiring priorities
The main reason behind this shift is AI. Companies are now focusing on automation and efficiency. Instead of hiring large numbers of fresh graduates or junior engineers, firms are investing more in experienced professionals who can directly work on AI systems or manage complex projects.
This means entry-level roles have reduced. Even strong academic backgrounds are not enough if candidates do not have practical experience. Companies are becoming more selective and careful with hiring.
Degrees alone are not enough
Qu pointed out that a university’s brand name does not carry the same weight as before. Recruiters now want proof of real-world skills. They are looking for candidates who have built products, contributed to open-source projects, published research, or completed meaningful internships.
In simple terms, companies want to see what you can do, not just where you studied.
Students who focused only on coursework may find it harder to compete. Those who built apps, worked on AI tools, or created visible projects during college are in a better position.
What skills matter now?
According to industry trends, strong AI knowledge, problem-solving ability, and hands-on coding experience are becoming essential. Communication skills and the ability to adapt to fast-changing technology are also important.
The message is clear: the job market is evolving. AI is not just replacing some tasks it is changing what companies expect from employees. For today’s graduates, success depends less on the name of their college and more on their ability to show real, practical skills.
The tech industry is still hiring, but the rules of the game have changed.
