Inside the Umaid Bhawan Palace

The curse of a saint, who declared that a time of drought would follow the Rathore Dynasty’s successful rule, is connected to the history of the construction of the Umaid Bhawan Palace. After Pratap Singh’s roughly 50-year rule came to an end, Jodhpur saw three years of terrible drought and starvation in the 1920s. In order to survive the terrible conditions, the local farmers turned to the then Maharaja, Umaid Singh, who was the 37th Rathore ruler of Marwar in Jodhpur. Umaid Singh offered them some jobs. The Maharaja made the decision to construct an opulent palace in an effort to aid the farmers. A contemporary of Edwin Lutyens, who had designed the structures of the New Delhi government complex, he hired Henry Vaughan Lanchester as the architect to create the palace’s blueprints, a 1929 foundation.

There were between 2,000 and 3,000 people working on it at one time. The Maharaja took possession of the palace shortly after it was finished, in 1943, and before Indian Independence. The palace was constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 11 million, as per scholars. It was one of the biggest royal mansions in the world when it first appeared in 1943.

The palace is separated into three functioning sections: the royal family’s house, the opulent Taj Palace Hotel, and a museum highlighting the royal family of Jodhpur’s history in the 20th century.
