Maha Shivratri Fasting Dos:

Wake up early: The fasting day should start with an early awakening, two hours before sunrise, commonly referred to as Brahma Muhurta. Before you begin fasting, make a sankalp (intention) for the day. Declare your devotion to Lord Shiva and your pledge to observe the fast with sincerity and purity.

Cleanliness: Upon waking up, take a bath and wear clean attire, preferably in white. Make a vow (Sankalp) of dedication and devotion. Opt for clean and comfortable clothes, choosing auspicious colours like red, pink, or yellow.

Choose satvik foods: Opt for satvik (pure) foods such as fruits, nuts, dairy products, and vegetables during your fast. These foods are believed to enhance spiritual vibrations and keep the body light.

Stay hydrated: Fasting doesn’t mean neglecting your body’s hydration needs. Consume plenty of water, coconut water, and herbal teas throughout the day to stay hydrated and maintain energy levels.

Chant mantras and prayers: Engage in the recitation of Shiva mantras and prayers. This not only keeps your mind focused on the spiritual aspect of the day but also adds positive vibrations to your surroundings,one is advised to chant “Om Namah Shivaya” throughout the day for spiritual focus.

Respect and restraint: Refrain from harsh words, anger, and disrespecting elders to maintain the purity of your fast.

Timing of breaking the fast: To maximise the benefits of the fast, it is advisable to break it between sunrise and before the end of Chaturdashi Tithi, following Drikpanchang guidelines.

Maha Shivratri Fasting Donts:

Avoid non-satvik foods: Refrain from consuming non-satvik foods like onions, garlic, and grains during the fast. These are believed to disturb the spiritual energy and are typically avoided in traditional fasting practices.

Limit salt intake: Excessive salt can lead to dehydration, so it’s advisable to limit your salt intake during the fasting period. Opt for rock salt (sendha namak) if necessary.

Offerings: Avoid offering vermillion (sindoor/kumkum) and coconut water to the Shivalinga. Additionally, refrain from offering Tulsi (holy basil) leaves, as they are traditionally associated with Lord Vishnu.

Full parikrama: As per the Shiva Purana, perform only a half-parikrama (circumambulation) around the Shivalinga.

Stay away from distractions: Use this day for spiritual contemplation and focus on your connection with Lord Shiva. Minimize distractions such as television, social media, and unnecessary conversations.

Avoid overeating during break of fast: When breaking your fast, start with light and easily digestible foods. Overeating or consuming heavy meals immediately after the fast can be harsh on the digestive system.

Refrain from negative thoughts: Mahashivratri is a day of spiritual significance. Avoid negative thoughts, gossip, and criticism. Maintain a positive and uplifting mindset throughout the day.

Intoxicants: Abstain from alcohol, tobacco, and other intoxicants during the fast.

Food: While the level of strictness in the fast varies, avoid grains, pulses, and food items considered tamasic, which are believed to increase negative qualities.
