Heatwave in India: Zomato urges users to avoid ordering during ‘peak’ afternoon, gets criticised

Amid the ongoing heatwave in the country which has marred the daily lives of the people and claimed the lives of several, food-delivery platform Zomato made a special appeal to its users via the social media platform X. 

In its post on X, the platform urged its users to not order during the peak hours in the afternoon. “Please avoid ordering during peak afternoon unless absolutely necessary,” it requested.

Food delivery app avoiding delivery?

The post by Zomato garnered immediate attention and has over 857 comments and one thousand likes so far. 

While several people advocated for a more humane approach towards delivery partners, many criticised the platform for its request.

Reacting to the post, an X user, Dhimahi Jain, wrote, “A food delivery app is avoiding delivery. not a good idea though; instead, you should focus on the prevention of the heat that can be taken by the delivery man.”

Another user supported the move and wrote, “I was thinking the same thing today, then decided to eat Maggi instead of ordering online.”, meanwhile a user wrote, “Did the same today . Ordered directly from the Restaurant. Thank you for being so considerate about the delivery boys.”

However, a major section of the people had objection to the request. Let’s take a look at some of the comments.

Deaths due to heatwave in India

According to the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), as many as 56 people have died due to temperatures ranging between 44-46 degrees Celsius across most of the country. Out of these, 46 deaths occurred in May alone.

As per media reports,as per the data by government, the country saw nearly 25,000 cases of suspected heat stroke.
