Brad Pitt is seen donning a shirt from Indian sustainable fashion label 11.11/eleven eleven in a pivotal scene in his latest film, F1, which hit theatres on June 27. The organic cotton shirt in indigo, crafted using the traditional Tangaliya weave, was chosen by acclaimed costume designer Julian Day to bring authenticity to Pitt’s character, Sonny Hayes.
Known for his celebrated work on Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, Julian Day explained the styling choice in a recent interview with News18. He revealed that the selection of the 11.11/eleven eleven piece was deliberate and driven by the narrative tone of the film as well as current trends in fashion.
“It was great to dress Brad Pitt for F1, the movie and the brand 11.11/eleven eleven worked so well for his character. Its soft indigo tones helped create the right palette for him,” said Day. He further added, “Indian brands are so hot at the moment. Their use of natural fabrics and dyes and how they are handcrafted play so well in this current environment.”
Founded by designers Mia Morikawa and Himanshu Shani, 11.11/eleven eleven is widely recognised for its commitment to slow fashion, indigenous cotton, and eco-friendly dyeing processes. The shirt featured in the film is made from handspun, handwoven cotton and incorporates the Tangaliya weaving technique – an ancestral craft from Gujarat’s Surendranagar and Kachchh districts. It is distinguished by its bead-like patterns, or dana, formed by twisting coloured threads across warp yarns, creating symmetrical motifs that appear on both sides of the fabric.
Dyed with natural indigo through a fermentation process using 100% fructose, the shirt is a striking example of environmentally-conscious fashion. It was assembled by a team of eight skilled artisans over a period of 9.20 hours.
Styled with a pair of timeless blue jeans, Pitt’s on-screen look has drawn attention not just for its simplicity but also for its cultural significance and craftsmanship. The film, directed by Joseph Kosinski, also features Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, and Kerry Condon in leading roles.
