For over six decades, Barbie has been more than just a toy. She’s been a symbol of imagination, ambition, and change. From astronauts to doctors and entrepreneurs, Barbie has worn many hats, inspiring millions of children to dream big. In recent years, the brand has focused on becoming more inclusive, reflecting the diverse world children live in today.

Now, Barbie is breaking new ground once again by launching her first-ever doll with Type 1 diabetes. This new doll is part of the Barbie Fashionistas line, which celebrates diversity in appearance, body type, ability, and health.

The goal behind this launch is simple: help children with diabetes feel seen and create awareness among all kids about what it’s like to live with a chronic health condition. Through play, children learn empathy and understanding, and Barbie wants to make sure that kids who manage diabetes can see themselves in their dolls and stories, too.

“Introducing a Barbie doll with Type 1 diabetes marks an important step in our commitment to inclusivity and representation,” said Krista Berger, senior vice president at Barbie. “Barbie helps shape how children see the world. By including medical conditions like T1D, more kids can see themselves in the stories they create.”

What’s special about barbie diabetes doll?

To make sure the doll looks realistic and educational, Barbie worked with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF), a diabetes research group. Together, they focused on every detail, from the medical devices to the doll’s clothing.

Here’s what makes this Barbie unique:

  • A glucose monitor is attached to her arm with a small heart-shaped medical tape.
  • A waist-worn insulin pump helps deliver insulin.
  • A smartphone displays a CGM (continuous glucose monitor) app to track blood sugar levels.
  • She wears a blue polka dot outfit — blue is the international colour for diabetes awareness.
  • A pastel blue handbag carries diabetes supplies or snacks.

This doll not only represents those with Type 1 diabetes but also helps other children learn about the condition naturally and compassionately through play.

What is Type 1 diabetes?

Type 1 diabetes is a condition where the body stops making insulin, a hormone that helps manage blood sugar. It usually starts in childhood or the teen years and needs daily insulin treatment. This is different from Type 2 diabetes, which is more common in adults and can sometimes be managed with lifestyle changes.

Barbie honours real-life role models

To support the launch, Barbie is also honouring two inspiring women who live with Type 1 diabetes, model Lila Moss and Peloton fitness trainer Robin Arzón.

“This doll can help show kids that challenges don’t hold us back, they make us stronger,” Arzón said.

Moss called the experience of being honoured by Barbie “surreal and special.”

In recent years, Barbie has also released dolls with wheelchairs, hearing aids, vitiligo, Down syndrome, and more, showing that inclusion is not just a trend, but a mission. With this new doll, Barbie continues to use her platform to start important conversations and empower all children, no matter their health condition.
