UTI in Men-Symptoms and Causes: Urinary tract obstruction, also known as a blocked urinary tract, is a medical condition that can affect the kidneys, ureters, bladder, or urethra which are parts of the urinary system.
According to Dr Tarun Dilip Javali, Consultant and H.O.D. – Department of Urology, Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, this obstruction can range from mild to severe and can impact people of any age.
“Understanding the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for urinary tract obstruction is important to seek timely medical attention,” Dr. Javali told Financial Express.com.
What is Urinary Tract Obstruction?
The urinary system is responsible for filtering blood, removing waste, and producing urine. When any part of this system becomes blocked, urine flow is hindered, potentially causing a build-up of pressure and even damage to the kidneys. Urinary tract obstruction can be partial or complete, affecting one or both kidneys.
What are the causes of Urinary Tract Obstruction?
There are various reasons why a urinary tract obstruction may occur, including:
- Kidney Stones: These hard mineral deposits can form in the kidneys and sometimes block the ureters (the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder), leading to pain and swelling.
- Enlarged Prostate: In men, the prostate can enlarge with age, potentially pressing against the urethra and restricting urine flow.
- Congenital Defects: Some people are born with structural abnormalities in their urinary tract, making them more susceptible to obstructions.
- Tumors: Cancers in the urinary tract or nearby organs can compress or invade the urinary structures, causing blockages.
- Scar Tissue: Scar tissue from infections, injuries, or surgeries can narrow the urinary tract, resulting in restricted urine flow.
What are the symptoms?
Urinary tract obstructions can present a range of symptoms, which may vary depending on the severity and location of the blockage. Common symptoms include:
- Pain: Severe pain in the lower back, sides, or abdomen, especially if kidney stones are involved.
- Difficulty Urinating: Frequent urges to urinate, a weak urine stream, or a feeling of incomplete bladder emptying.
- Blood in Urine: Known as hematuria, blood in the urine may appear pink or red, often indicating kidney stones or another urinary issue.
- Infections: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common with obstructions, presenting symptoms like fever, chills, and painful urination.
- Swelling: Severe cases can lead to swelling (hydronephrosis) due to the backup of urine in the kidneys.
- Complications of untreated Obstruction that you must know
If left untreated, urinary tract obstruction can lead to serious health issues, including:
- Kidney Damage: Prolonged obstruction can cause permanent damage to the kidneys.
- Infections: Urine that cannot flow properly can harbor bacteria, leading to recurrent infections.
- Hypertension: Chronic kidney issues can lead to high blood pressure, which can have long-term health impacts.
What are some treatment options?
The treatment for urinary tract obstruction varies depending on the cause, severity, and location of the blockage. Common treatment options include:
- Medications: Pain relievers, antibiotics (for infections), or medications to reduce prostate size can relieve symptoms and assist with urine flow.
- Surgical Procedures: Kidney stones may require procedures such as lithotripsy (using sound waves to break stones), or surgery for removal.
- Catheters: A catheter may be placed temporarily to help relieve blockage and ensure proper urine flow.
- Stents: A small tube called a stent may be inserted into the ureter to keep it open and ensure the urine can flow properly.
- Treating Underlying Causes: Addressing an enlarged prostate, tumors, or structural abnormalities may be necessary.
When to see a doctor?
It’s important to seek medical help if you experience symptoms like severe pain, blood in urine, or difficulty urinating, as these could indicate a urinary tract obstruction.
“Early detection and treatment are key to preventing long-term damage and maintaining a healthy urinary system. Urinary tract obstruction is a treatable condition, but it requires timely intervention to avoid serious complications. With early diagnosis and appropriate care, people affected by this condition can experience relief from symptoms and improve their quality of life,” Dr. Javali told Financial Express.com.
If you or a loved one experiences symptoms suggestive of a urinary blockage, consulting a healthcare professional is a proactive step towards health and well-being, he said.
