Temperatures have soared from 45 to over 50 degrees Celsius this summer, reaching an all-time high. People across the country are concerned about heat stroke and dehydration amidst the extreme heat. Many are avoiding outdoor activities during peak hours and increasing their intake of drinks and juices to stay hydrated and mitigate the effects of the heat.

In response, the national weather forecasting agency India Meteorological Department (IMD) has suggested several measures to minimise the impact of the heatwave.

Measure suggested by IMD to protect yourself from heat:

  • If you work outside, use a hat or an umbrella and also use a damp cloth on your head, neck, face and limbs.
  • Use fans, damp clothing and take bath in cold water frequently.
  • Keep animals in shade and give them plenty of water to drink.
  • If you  feel faint or ill, see a doctor immediately.
  • Avoid high-protein food and do not eat stale food.
  • Do not leave children or pets in parked vehicles.
  • Use ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, buttermilk, etc. Which helps you to rehydrate your body.
  • Keep your home cool, use curtains, shutters or sunshade or open windows at night.
