The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards lit up California on September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theatre with all the glitz, and glamour. Stars walked the red carpet in stunning gowns and tuxedos, and the night was packed with memorable wins, powerful speeches, and even a few awkward moments. But one familiar face was missing from the star-studded show and it was Sofia Vergara. Her no-show left fans both curious and concerned until the actress herself took to Instagram to reveal the reason she couldn’t attend.

The 53-year-old Modern Family star revealed that she was unable to attend the Emmys after suffering an unexpected health emergency just minutes before heading out to attend the event. Taking to Instagram, Vergara posted, “Didn’t make it to the Emmys… but I made it to the ER. The craziest eye (allergy) right before getting in the car.”

Vergara shared photos showing her visibly swollen right eye and another of herself in a hospital bed, rinsing her eye with water. While she wasn’t nominated this year, she had been scheduled to present the award for lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie. The honor instead went to Adolescence star Stephen Graham, presented by Brittany Snow and Malin Akerman of The Hunting Wives.

Her sudden allergy not only caught her fans off guard but also made everyone wonder about how unpredictable and disruptive eye allergies can be.

Why do sudden eye allergies happen?

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), eye allergies also known as allergic conjunctivitis occur when the eyes react to allergens like pollen, dust, pet dander, mould, or even makeup and skincare products. The body’s immune system mistakes these harmless substances as threats and releases histamines, leading to redness, swelling, itching, and watery eyes.

As per AAO, eye allergies can come on suddenly and range from mild irritation to severe swelling that requires emergency care. Triggers may vary depending on the environment, lifestyle, or even the season. For example, pollen counts tend to increase in spring, making seasonal allergies worse.

Common causes of eye allergies

As per Mayo Clinic, common causes of eye allergies include environmental triggers like dust, pollen, mould, and animal dander. Everyday products such as eye makeup, eyelash glue, or facial creams that accidentally get into the eye can also cause irritation. Contact lenses, especially if worn too long or not cleaned properly, is another culprit.

Further, pollution and cigarette smoke can worsen symptoms, making eyes red and watery. However, sometimes, allergic conjunctivitis is often confused with infections like ‘pink eye,’ but unlike infections, allergies are not contagious.

How to manage and prevent eye allergies

According to the Mayo Clinic, the best way to manage eye allergies is to avoid known triggers whenever possible. Simple steps like washing hands and face often, removing makeup before bed, and wearing glasses or sunglasses outdoors can reduce exposure. Artificial tears or antihistamine eye drops are commonly recommended for relief. But in severe cases like Sofia Vergara’s seeking urgent medical attention is important to prevent any further complications.

As per World Health Organization (WHO) rising air pollution levels globally are contributing to an increase in eye-related allergies and irritation, making prevention even more important. Hence, what might seem like minor irritation should not be ignored, especially if symptoms escalate quickly.
