The National Capital is currently witnessing an uptick in seasonal flu cases. A recent survey conducted by LocalCircles revealed that fever, sore throat, cough, headache, stomach troubles, joint pain, and respiratory problems are among the symptoms of swine flu (H5N1) that are reported to be present in 54 percent of households in Delhi.
The survey also highlighted that these cases are fueling fear among the public as the symptoms closely resemble COVID-19 infection. The survey also found that small children and the elderly (those over 50) are most at risk for contracting these symptoms.
Dr Neha Rastogi Panda, Consultant-Infectious Diseases, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram told Financial Express.com that hospitals and clinics across Delhi-NCR are seeing a sharp and constant rise in symptomatic upper respiratory tract infection cases.
“Majority people are coming in with fever, prolonged bad cough with minimal expectoration , sore throat, and body aches along with congestion and cold. The increase in number of cases might be due to the changing weather, high pollution levels, and the spread of different flu viruses. We have observed in last two months, lot of cases with symptomatic infection and lab confirmed H3 N2 and H1 N1 cases amongst them Seasonal flu is common especially during weather changes,” Dr. Panda explained.
The transition from winter to summer, along with sudden changes in temperature, winds and immediate reflex behavioural patterns weakens the body’s immunity, making people more vulnerable to infections. Additionally, air pollution can also play a role as polluted air can irritate the respiratory system, making it easier for viruses to attack and cause infections.
I myself have been seeing 10-15 patients per day, Dr. Dr. Tushar Tayal, Consultant, Internal Medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram told Financial Express.com.
What are the symptoms?
Common symptoms include high fever, cough, cold with congestion sore throat, fatigue, and body pain. Some people, especially children, may also experience vomiting or diarrhea. One particular observation is prolonged cough with difficulty in breathing. In more severe cases, the infection can lead to breathing difficulties, especially for elderly individuals and those with pre-existing lung conditions, Dr. Panda highlighted.
Individuals suffering from the flu report the following symptoms:
- Fever: Acute rise in body temperature.
- Respiratory Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in the throat, cough, and congestion.
- Body Aches: Muscle and joint pain resulting in discomfort.
- Fatigue & Headaches: Weakness or fatigue, frequently with headaches.
- Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea can occur in some people, particularly children.
Symptoms begin within a period of one to four days from the time of exposure and last anywhere up to a week. In rare situations, flu complications such as pneumonia can develop, especially in children, older adults, and persons with chronic health disorders.
What you can do protect yourself?
To protect yourself from the flu, it is recommend to get a flu vaccine, which reduces the risk of severe infection.
“It is especially important for young children, older adults, and people with existing health conditions. Wearing a mask in crowded places can also help reduce the risk of catching the virus. Regular handwashing with soap or sanitizer is another simple but effective way to prevent infection. If someone has flu symptoms, it is best to rest, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid self-medication,” Dr. Panda told Financial Express.com.
In case of a high fever lasting more than three days or difficulty breathing, seeking medical help is crucial, she added.
Prevention of flu infection is possible by taking the following preventive measures:
- Get Vaccinated: Seasonal flu vaccination prevents serious illness.
- Maintain Hygiene: Frequent handwashing and not touching the face can reduce the transmission risk.
- Practice Respiratory Etiquette: Keeping the mouth and nose covered upon sneezing or coughing and wearing masks in public places can help prevent transmission.
- Avoid Close Contact: Physical distance from infected persons and steering clear of public gatherings can minimize exposure.
“Individuals with extreme flu symptoms, including shortness of breath, chest discomfort, dizziness, or ongoing vomiting, must be taken to the hospital immediately. Early treatment, including antiviral drugs, can prevent complications in vulnerable populations,” Dr. Tayal told Financial Express.com.
