When Melania Trump stepped out for her husband’s second presidential inauguration, many were quick to comment on her outfit’s sombre tone. One of the most striking reactions came from an online user who jokingly asked, “Is it a funeral?” Their comment seemed to capture the general sentiment of many who were perplexed by the former First Lady’s choice of a dark, reserved outfit, with some critics likening her appearance to a funeral attendee. The dark navy coat, matching skirt, and wide-brimmed hat stood in stark contrast to the more vibrant outfits typically worn at such high-profile events, leaving a sense of melancholy that quickly caught the attention of social media users.

Another controversy revolving around the First Lady’s fashion choice was if it was Melania Trump at all. X (formerly Twitter) users couldn’t help but ask  “Is Melania attending, or is it her body double?” The wide-brimmed hat, which obscured much of her face, led some to joke that it might be a latex mask, while others pointed out differences in height and posture, suggesting the possibility of a stand-in. However, despite the theories circulating online, it’s highly unlikely that the First Lady hired a body double for such a monumental occasion.

Where it happened: Trump’s Presidential Inauguration

The controversial fashion moment took place on 20 January, during the inauguration of Donald Trump for his second term as President of the United States. As expected, the event drew national attention, with many focusing on the pomp and ceremony, but it was Melania’s understated and almost invisible look that became a talking point. Wearing a navy coat and a wide-brimmed hat that obscured much of her face, the outfit stood in contrast to the festive nature typically associated with such occasions. The overall vibe of her attire left some questioning whether it was intentionally meant to be understated or if it simply missed the mark.

This isn’t Melania’s first time wearing controversial outfits

This isn’t the first time Melania Trump has sparked conversations with her fashion choices. From her “I REALLY DON’T CARE. DO U?” jacket worn during a visit to a child migrant detention centre in 2018 to her muted look at the inauguration, Melania has been no stranger to making bold statements with her wardrobe. Critics have frequently scrutinised her outfits, often interpreting them as deliberate, calculated choices meant to make a statement. Whether it’s pushing the boundaries of fashion or sending messages through clothing, Melania has continually drawn attention for her unconventional approach to first lady attire. The 2021 inauguration look continues this trend, as it raised questions about her emotional state and her desire to distance herself from the traditional role of the First Lady.

In an interview with Fox and Friends, Melania addressed these speculations, expressing that while some may see her simply as the wife of the president, she has always maintained her individuality. She also revealed that, like many couples, she and Donald don’t always agree politically, and she provides him with advice, which he sometimes chooses to take. Yet, despite these public discussions, it’s clear that Melania’s focus remains on balancing her personal priorities as a mother, wife, and First Lady, even if it means stepping back from the spotlight.
