The courtroom drama Haq, starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, is all set for its OTT release after a successful theatrical run. Released in cinemas in November 2025, the film stood out for its bold subject and sparked conversations about women’s rights, law, and personal freedom.
Haq OTT release date and where to watch
According to a Times Now report, Haq is expected to premiere on Netflix on January 2, 2026. While the makers have not officially confirmed the date, it is said to be locked. The film had its theatrical release on November 7 and will arrive on streaming nearly two months later. Netflix is expected to host the legal drama for viewers in India and overseas.
Haq: Story, cast and more
Haq is inspired by the landmark Shah Bano case, officially known as Mohd. Ahmed Khan v. Shah Bano Begum, one of the most debated legal battles in India. Set in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the film revisits issues related to maintenance, personal law, and women’s rights.
Yami Gautam plays Shazia Bano, a Muslim woman who takes a strong stand after being abandoned by her husband. She approaches the court seeking maintenance for herself and her children under Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Emraan Hashmi portrays Advocate Mohammad Abbas Khan.
In Haq, Shazia Bano fights for justice after her husband Abbas Khan leaves her. Abbas, a respected lawyer, ends up opposing her in court, turning their personal conflict into a public legal battle. Director Suparn S Varma said the film asks “tough but important questions about faith, equality, and justice.” He added that the film encourages viewers to think about issues that remain relevant decades after the original Shah Bano case.
The real Shah Bano case
The film draws from the real-life Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum case of 1985. The Supreme Court ruling gave a Muslim woman the right to financial support from her ex-husband, sparking nationwide debates on women’s rights, religion, and equality.
The story of Shah Bano Begum, as documented in journalist Jigna Vora’s book Bano: Bharat Ki Beti, tells how in 1978, the 62-year-old woman went to court seeking financial help from her ex-husband, a wealthy lawyer. What began as her personal fight for justice turned into a major legal and social movement. The Supreme Court judgment in her favour became a landmark moment for women’s rights in India.
