Tamil rom-com ‘Dude’, released on Friday, October 17, ahead of Diwali, has garnered mixed reviews on social media. While some are calling it a fun-filled emotional ride, others have dismissed the slow pace in the second half. The Gen Z vibe of the film and the lead pair Pradeep Ranganathan and Mamitha Baiju’s chemistry has received thumbs up. The movie may have gaping holes in its narrative, but it does have its moments with netizens praising the ‘interval twist’. Written and directed by Keerthiswaran, the film has collected around Rs 3.89 crore from advance booking.

Childhood friends Agan (Pradeep Ranganathan) and Kural (Mamitha Baiju) are inseparable. Unaware of Agan’s hidden feelings for her, Kural is busy resolving her own romantic troubles. Agan on the other hand wants her happiness even if that means curbing his own romantic desires.

Engaging first half

A typical rom-com, Dude’s first half has been termed engaging and entertaining by the viewers. However, the second half doesn’t match the energy and pace of the first, and drags.

“Though predictable, it engages for the most part hitting all the beats of a proper rom-com so far. There are a few pacing dips and the comedy feels a bit off at first and but lands well by the interval. 2nd Half Awaits!” says a user.

“DUDE’s first half is youth vibe and thoroughly entertaining – the fresh treatment keeps the audience constantly guessing, packed with plenty of Pradeep Ranganathan style moments. Sharat Kumar’s characterization further adds strength to the film,” says another user.

Many people felt the tighter editing and better screenplay could have saved the film in the second half.

“Director Keerthiswaran sets up the film with potential but falters in the screenplay, particularly in the latter half. Pradeep and Mamitha perform well as expected, while Sai Abhinayakar makes an impressive debut and elevates scenes when needed. The editing feels abrupt at times and could’ve been much tighter, especially in the second half,” an X review read.
