Assamese singer Zubeen Garg died in Singapore on September 19 at the age of 52 after drowning due to a seizure, a day before his performance at the Northeast India Festival. Upon arrival of his body from Singapore, fans gathered in lakhs at Jalukbari in Guwahati to pay their respects. 

The last rites will be performed with full state honours. Garg’s body was taken to Kamarkuchi at Sonapur around 10 am on Tuesday, accompanied by about 85 family members, relatives, and close associates.

Zubeen’s last rites to be performed by his sister

Zubeen Garg’s last rites will be performed by his younger sister Palmee Borthakur. The singer’s elder sister Jongki Barthakur died in an accident on January 12, 2002, near Tezpur in Assam’s Sonitpur district. The singer didn’t have any children.

From students at Gauhati University to fans at Srimanta Shankardev Kalashetra, and even Jorhatians outside the Garg family home, countless clips of people singing or playing Mayabini went viral on social media.

In Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, and other cities where Assamese communities reside, the melody of Mayabini was heard over the weekend, with fans mourning.

Second post-mortem conducted in Guwahati

A second post-mortem of Zubeen Garg’s body was carried out on Tuesday morning at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Doctors from GMCH, along with AIIMS-Guwahati, were present. The examination was conducted following requests on social media and with the consent of Garg’s family, to rule out any foul play.

Last rites arrangements and cremation site

After the second post-mortem, Garg’s body was taken back to Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati, where it was previously kept for public viewing, before being moved to the newly arranged cremation ground at Kamarkuchi in Sonapur, located about 25 km outside the city. Thousands of fans have been present at the cremation site since Monday night.

Garg’s family brought his pet dogs,  Iko, Diya, Rambo, and Maya, to bid him farewell. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Sarma shared a video on X, writing: “It is often said that dogs are a man’s best friend…for Iko, Diya, Rambo & Maya, Zubeen was their family and today as they bid a final farewell, they must have felt the same emotions which we are feeling now, heartbroken.”

Union minister Kiren Rijiju will be present at the cremation along with other dignitaries. CM Himanta Sarma paid tribute at Sarusajai Stadium ahead of the last rites, saying, “There will never be another Zubeen.”

“As a Zubeen fan, personally, I didn’t endorse the idea of a second post-mortem on his body. But as Chief Minister, people’s sentiment holds more weight than my opinion. Hence, we have consented to cut open his body and do a second post-mortem,” he said in a post on X.
