The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday informed that a well marked Low Pressure Area situated in the Southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to escalate into a Depression within the same region within the next 24 hours. 

“The Well Marked Low Pressure Area over Southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a Depression over same region during next 24 hours and further into a Cyclonic Storm over Southwest Bay of Bengal around 03rd December,” IMD said. 

This weather pattern is anticipated to bring about a period of wet weather accompanied by thunderstorm activity in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra over the next two days. Additionally, the influence of a Western Disturbance is set to persist, impacting the Western Himalayan region and the adjoining plains. 

On the other hand, northern parts of the country also experienced showers. Chandigarh experienced heavy rain and hail on Thursday morning, while Srinagar observed a bout of light rain. Meanwhile, substantial snowfall persisted in Poonch.

Delhi weather update 

According to the forecast by IMD, the national capital is expected to have partly cloudy skies with a chance of shallow fog in the morning on Friday. Anticipated temperature ranges are around 25 degrees Celsius for the maximum and 13 degrees Celsius for the minimum. The IMD has indicated the likelihood of shallow fog persisting over the next four days.

Intense cold wave grips Himachal 

A severe cold wave has swept across Himachal Pradesh, impacting various regions. High-altitude tribal areas and elevated hills experienced a new layer of snow, while the mid and lower hills were subjected to brisk, icy winds and sporadic rainfall.

Fresh snowfall covered high altitude areas in tribal Lahaul and Spiti, Kinnaur, Pangi, and mountain passes. The local meteorological office forecasts isolated rain in mid and lower hills, with potential rain or snow in higher hills on December 1, followed by dry weather thereafter.

Heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal 

An orange alert has been issued by the Met Office for coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, signaling the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall from December 2 to 4. During this period, expect heavy to very heavy rain at isolated locations in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur districts of Tamil Nadu. 

Additionally, isolated heavy rain is anticipated in Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Villupuram districts of Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, along with the Karaikal area. Residents in these regions are advised to stay vigilant, follow weather updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety during this expected period of intense rainfall.

  • Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over south Coastal Andhra Pradesh during December 3-4. 
  • Light to moderate rainfall at most places with isolated heavy rainfall is likely over Rayalaseema on December 3-4.
