The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday said that the wet spell is expected to persist in Northwest India until October 17. According to the latest weather forecast by the meteorological department, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over Tamil Nadu and Kerala for the next 24 hours before subsiding.
In the meantime, parts of the national capital experienced gusty winds and rain yesterday, making the weather pleasant. The windy conditions lowered the temperature to 30.5 degrees Celsius, which is three notches below the season’s average. Throughout the week, the maximum temperature is expected to range from 31 to 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature will be around 17 to 21 degrees Celsius.
Rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, was reported in areas such as Noida, Indirapuram, south Delhi, and east Delhi. Meanwhile, the weather forecast for Tuesday indicates a generally cloudy sky with the chance of light rain or thundershowers.
Rains continue to lash Kerala; orange alert issued
Following a temporary respite in the morning, Kerala witnessed continued rainfall on Monday, prompting IMD to release an orange alert for four districts. The orange alert was put in place for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts for the day. Additionally, the IMD issued a yellow alert for eight other districts across the state.
Snow, rains bring mercury down in Kashmir
Kashmir is experiencing an early arrival of winter, with the upper regions of the valley receiving a fresh round of light snowfall on Monday. Simultaneously, the plains of the region saw rainfall, prompting residents to use heating devices and don warm clothing.
Deputy Director, India Meteorological Department (IMD) Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmad said, “The weather changed on October 14. There have been rains at many places intermittently, snowfall in the higher reaches, while thunder and lightning have also taken place at some places. Light rains in the plains and snowfall in the higher reaches are going on since Monday morning and will continue intermittently on Tuesday as well. The weather will improve from October 18 and is expected to remain fair till October 24. There is no major spell of precipitation till October 24.”
Region-wise rainfall warning
In Northwest India, there is an expectation of light to moderate rainfall across the entire region, coupled with isolated thunderstorms and lightning, on both October 17, with a decreasing trend thereafter.
Moving to South India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is predicted, with isolated areas experiencing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe on today. Furthermore, very heavy rainfall is also likely in isolated places within Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
In East India, light to moderate rainfall is expected in numerous locations, with isolated pockets likely to experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands on October 17-18.
