Today Weather: India’s weather is set to take a cooler turn today, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Delhi witnessed early-morning thunderstorms, loud lightning, and rainfall over its western regions on June 15, bringing relief from the searing heatwave that has gripped the city for weeks.

Delhi Weather: Thunderstorms bring relief from scorching heat

The IMD issued a severe thunderstorm and strong wind alert for Delhi, advising residents to stay indoors. “A moderate to intense spell of rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and squally winds reaching speeds of 80–100 kmph” swept across the capital early this morning, the IMD stated.

Visuals from Krishi Bhavan, Rafi Marg, and Udyog Bhawan showed heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds. Despite the rainfall, Delhi continued to experience sweltering conditions with the temperature touching 47.4°C.

Red Alert for southern and western coasts

The IMD has also issued a red alert across several districts along the western coast, warning of extremely heavy rainfall and strong surface winds. In Maharashtra, Ratnagiri is on high alert, while in Karnataka, the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada are under watch. Kerala has placed five districts including Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod under red alert. The rest of the state remains under an orange alert.

Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district has also been issued a red alert due to the forecast of intense rainfall.

Monsoon in India

Several other regions, including parts of Maharashtra such as Pune, Raigad, and Satara are under orange alert. As the monsoon advances, parts of Bihar and Rajasthan are also under close observation, with forecasts predicting thunderstorms, lightning, dust storms, and gusty winds.

The onset of the monsoon has brought much-needed relief to many regions reeling under extreme heat.
