The number of deaths from the twin encounters in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam area jumped to eight as security personnel found the bodies of two additional terrorists on Sunday, according to officials, PTI reports.
Two army soldiers, one of them an elite Para Commando, had died fighting the terrorists.
The twin encounters began on Saturday in two villages of Kulgam district. “Bodies of two terrorists were recovered from the Modergam encounter site while four bodies of terrorists were recovered from Chinnigam site,” the officials said.
Both confrontations started as a result of information that terrorists were hiding in these two villages, which are roughly 12 km apart.
There has been a spike in terrorist assaults in Jammu and Kashmir during the last few months. ADGP Anand Jain had stated that three terrorists were neutralised in June during a confrontation with security personnel in the Gandoh, Bhaderwah area of district Doda in Jammu and Kashmir.
The anti-militancy operation was going on till last reports came in.
Officials claim that on Saturday, a drone was deployed to search the terrorists’ remains. Yesterday, VK Birdhi, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for Kashmir, visited the scene of the encounter and declared that the operation will go on. He stated that the killing of these terrorists is a major victory for the security forces and that the J-K Police and other security agencies are still monitoring the terrorists’ movements.
