At least three people were killed this week as Indore in Madhya Pradesh suffered a 32-hour traffic jam. Thousands were left stranded behind the wheel on a stretch of the Indore-Dewas highway on Thursday evening — and remained there till Friday night. The congestion took place after traffic was diverted to a narrow service road due to ongoing construction work and waterlogging.

According to a Hindustan Times report, the congestion was primarily caused by ongoing highway construction work and severe waterlogging due to heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department had released orange and yellow alerts for various parts of the state earlier this week — including isolated parts of Indore. Traffic was reportedly diverted into a narrow service lane on Thursday — leading to extreme congestion and chaos. The situation was reportedly worsened by the lack of alternative routes through nearby villages.

Three people were killed after being trapped by the multi-day traffic jam — with 32-year-old Sandeep Patel suffering a heart attack while waiting. He was being rushed to the hospital after complaining about chest pain. His condition deteriorated rapidly amid the traffic snarl and he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Two other people — 62-year-oldKamal Panchal and 55-year-old Balram Patel were also reported dead on Friday after getting stuck in the traffic jam for hours.

“We were stuck in the jam for one and a half hours. During this time my father got nervous, he complained of heaviness and fainted in the car. He was taken to a private hospital in Dewas, where doctors declared him dead,” News18 was told by Panchal’s son.
