Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday took a dig at the opposition, accusing them of attempting to control Parliament through disruptions and chaos, for their own political gains.

Addressing the media ahead of the Winter Session of Parliament, PM Modi said those who had been repeatedly rejected by the people were trying to hijack parliamentary proceedings through “hooliganism”.

PM Modi’s comments came just a few days after the BJP-led coalition secured a decisive victory in the Maharashtra Assembly elections, winning 235 seats and leaving the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi with just 49 seats in the 288-member House. Earlier, the BJP also claimed a surprise third consecutive win in Haryana, defeating the Congress, which had been considered the pre-poll favorite.

“There should be a healthy debate in the Parliament but, unfortunately, certain individuals are trying to control Parliament for their own political gains, resorting to disruptions and chaos,” PM Modi said. He added,  “Though their tactics ultimately fail, the people watch their behaviour closely and deliver justice when the time comes.”

The Prime Minister further expressed that he had repeatedly urged opposition members for smoother functioning of Parliament, with some even agreeing to the idea. However, he said, “Those who have been continuously rejected by the public ignore the words of their colleagues and disrespect their sentiments and that of democracy,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi also emphasised on the significance of the Winter Session, marking the 75th anniversary of India’s Constitution. “This session is important in many ways. Tomorrow, we will celebrate this milestone,” he said.

The Winter Session, which commenced on Monday, will run until December 20.
