The Telangana government is all set to conduct a comprehensive caste census across the state between November 4-5, with plans to complete the initiative by November 30, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar said Saturday.
Prabhakar made the announcement following a cabinet meeting where officials approved the survey’s proforma, laying the groundwork for the statewide assessment.
The survey is expected to gather data on the socio-economic status and distribution of caste groups, aimed at aiding the state in planning targeted welfare measures.
Minister Ponnam Prabhakar announced that around 80,000 government employees will be enlisted for the upcoming caste survey, with appropriate training to be provided.
Following a resolution from the Telangana Assembly, the state cabinet approved the survey proforma, targeting completion by November 30. Prabhakar stated that the survey, covering every household, is set to begin on November 4 or 5. All data collected will be made publicly available.
Revenue Minister P. Srinivas Reddy added that the cabinet also approved the construction of 3,500 houses for the economically disadvantaged in each of Telangana’s 119 assembly constituencies.
“A day or two after Diwali, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy will launch the Indiramma Housing programme,” he said.
Expansions to the Hyderabad Metro Rail are also planned, with a 76.4-kilometer extension across five routes, an investment exceeding Rs 24,000 crore under a public-private partnership (PPP) between state and central governments.
Additionally, the cabinet approved the development of a new road network using the PPP model, with a senior official-led committee established to assess similar models in other states. This infrastructure project is estimated to require between Rs 25,000 crore and Rs 28,000 crore over the next four years.
