Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday, at an event in Chandigarh, dedicated to the nation the implementation of three new criminal laws, asserting that the era of prolonged trials, famously depicted as ‘tarikh pe tarikh,’ has come to an end.
Accompanied by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, PM Modi highlighted the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) as a transformative legal framework aimed at delivering swift justice and fostering equality, harmony, and social justice.
With such verdicts, the criminals will now come to know that days of ‘tarikh pe tarikh’ are over, he said.

PM Modi underscored the impact of the new laws by citing examples of expedited verdicts: a two-month trial in Chandigarh for a vehicle theft case, a 20-year sentence in Delhi delivered within 60 days, and life imprisonment in Bihar for a murder case adjudicated in just 14 days. He emphasised that these outcomes reflect the commitment to ensuring timely justice under the new system.
The Prime Minister called for broader discussions on laws aimed at safeguarding citizens’ dignity and rights, urging equal focus on lesser-debated provisions alongside high-profile topics like the abrogation of Article 370 and triple talaq.
“When the Article 370 was removed, a lot of discussion took place over it. Similarly, discussion took place when a law came on triple talaq. These days, discussion on a law relating to the Wakf board is taking place,” he said, PTI reported.

PM Modi also introduced digital tools such as e-Saksha, Nyay Shruti, Nyay Setu, and the e-Summon Portal, developed to support the new legal framework and streamline processes. He highlighted provisions ensuring that no accused person can be detained indefinitely without trial, reflecting the system’s commitment to justice and humanity.
“But now zero FIR has been given a legal shape. One can get a case registered from anywhere,” PM said.
He called on state governments to effectively implement these reforms, arguing that a robust and timely justice system would not only empower citizens but also encourage foreign investments by mitigating fears of legal delays.
With these initiatives, Modi emphasised that the country is entering a new era of justice, where laws serve as instruments of empowerment and equality for all.
