Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly’s elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly and his wife Arpita had a narrow escape during a speedboat mishap off the coast of Puri on Saturday evening, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred near the Puri Lighthouse when the couple was enjoying water sports. According to eyewitnesses, the speedboat carrying them capsized after being hit by a huge wave, throwing all passengers into the sea.

“We were saved by the grace of God. I am still in trauma. This should not happen and water sports in the sea must be properly regulated,” Arpita Ganguly told PTI. She added that they were rescued quickly by alert lifeguards, whose swift response helped prevent a tragedy.
Arpita also said she plans to write to the Puri Superintendent of Police and the Odisha Chief Minister after returning to Kolkata, urging stricter safety measures for water-based tourism.
The incident coincides with rough sea conditions along the Odisha coast. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rainfall this week due to a developing low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea areas from Wednesday as wind speeds may exceed 45 kmph.
