BJP leader Smriti Irani on Wednesday accused Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra of “insulting” Lal Bahadur Shastri after a video of Priyanka garlanding a statue statue of the former prime minister with a garland she had worn.

The purported video was shot during Priyanka’s visit to Lal Bahadur Shastri’s ancestral home in Ramnagar on Wednesday.

Union minister Irani posted a limerick in Hindi on Twitter to take a dig at the Congress general secretary in charge of eastern UP.

In her “arrogance”, she chose a used garland, clapped, waved her hands and left after insulting Shastri, Irani tweeted, tagging the video.

The BJP leader also took a dig at the Congress over a woman’s accusation that the opposition party’s workers behaved inappropriately with her.

Following Irani’s lead, Uttar Pradesh minister Siddharth Nath Singh also shared the video to condemn Priyanka.

Priyanka Gandhi finished a three-day tour of Uttar Pradesh by visiting prime minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi on Wednesday. Priyanka launched a blistering attack on Modi, asking him to not treat people ‘as fools’. She also said that the upcoming Lok Sabha elections were a ‘new freedom struggle’.

Meanwhile, the BJP has fielded Irani against Congress president Rahul Gandhi from Amethi Lok Sabha seat once again. Irani had during the previous general election held in 2014, had given a tough fight to Rahul. The margin between the winner (Rahul) and first runner-up (Irani) was around 1 lakh. Before this, Rahul had won from here by a huge margin of over 3 lakh votes.

The polling for the Lok Sabha elections would be held from April 11 to May 19. India’s most populous state Uttar Pradesh would go to polls in seven phases.
