At least three thieves broke into a jewellery shop in the Bhogal area in southeast Delhi’s Jangpura on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday and escaped with valuables worth Rs 21 crore.

The heist occurred at Umrao Singh Jewellers, established in 1948. The thieves allegedly got onto the building’s terrace through a neighbouring building and entered the jewellery store with three floors.

The police said the thieves cut the cables of the CCTV system at the shop before they executed the heist, Indian Express reported.

“They went to the ground floor of the building where a strongroom is situated. Cash worth Rs 10 to 15 lakh and gold and diamond worth Rs 21 crore was located there. They made a circular hole in the concrete strongroom. One of the thieves entered the strongroom and stuffed all the valuables in a bag. They fled through the same path where they entered from,” the police said.

The theft came to light when the owner, Sanjeev Jain, opened the shop on Tuesday morning, after a day off on Monday. “When we opened the shop on Tuesday, we noticed a hole in the strongroom wall where the valuables were kept,” Jain told the media.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajesh Deo told ThePrint, “An FIR is being registered. We are confirming the value of the stolen goods, but it looks to be huge.”
