Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi today took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other BJP leaders for adding Chowkidaar before their names on their Twitter accounts. Speaking at an event in Prayagraj’s Dumduma Ghat as part of her three-day Gana Yatra, the Congress in-charge for eastern Uttar Pradesh pointed out that a person told her that while chowkidaar (watchmen) are for the rich, farmers are left to fend for themselves.
“Unki (Prime Minister) marzi apne naam ke aage kya lagaen. Mujhe ek kisan bhai ne kaha ki ‘dekhiye chowkidaar to ameeron ke hote hain, hum kisan to apne khud chowkidaar hote hain. (Its upto to the prime minister what he want to add in front of his name. A farmer told me that even as watchmen are for rich, farmers have to take care of themselves),” she said.
On Sunday, a day after launching ‘Main Bhi Chowkidaar’ campaign, PM Narendra Modi added Chowkidaar in front of his name. A number of other BJP leaders and party supporters followed suit.
Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra kicked off Congress’s campaign for Parliamentary polls in Uttar Pradesh on Monday by offering prayers at Hanuman temple. During her three day visit, Priyank gandhi will cover 100-km distance by boat in Ganga from Allahabad to Varanasi.
While launching the campaign, Modi said, “Your Chowkidar is standing firm and serving the nation. But, I am not alone. Everyone who is fighting corruption, dirt, social evils is a Chowkidar. Everyone working hard for the progress of India is a Chowkidar. Today, every Indian is saying-#MainBhiChowkidar.”
“As Chowkidars of our nation, we are committed to creating a clean economy by using cashless financial transactions. The menace of corruption and black money has adversely affected us for decades. Time to eliminate these for a better future”, added Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.
