Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on January 8, 2025, for the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) Convention. This will mark his first visit to the state in 2025, and extensive preparations are underway to ensure the success of the event, which will bring together global members of the Indian diaspora.

PM Modi will arrive at Bhubaneswar airport from Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, aboard a special Indian Air Force aircraft. He is expected to arrive in the evening and will stay overnight at Raj Bhawan, Bhubaneswar. The next day, on January 9, he will attend the main event at Janata Maidan. His schedule includes attending the convention for around 90 minutes before returning to the airport for his flight back to Delhi.

About PBD

The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas is an important event, commemorating the return of Mahatma Gandhi to India from South Africa on January 9, 1915. It celebrates the achievements of the Indian diaspora and their role in India’s development. Since 2003, the convention has been held to strengthen the connection between the overseas Indian community and the government. This biennial event fosters dialogue on global issues, and this year’s theme, “Diaspora’s Contribution to a Viksit Bharat” (Developed India), aims to focus on the integral role of the diaspora in India’s progress.

A key highlight of this year’s PBD is the presence of President Christine Carla Kangaloo of Trinidad and Tobago as the chief guest. The country is a member of CARICOM grouping and the presence of the president of that nation underscores the strengthening ties between India and the Caribbean. This participation further enhances the significance of the convention on a global scale.

Security Measures

To ensure smooth logistics and security during the event, the Odisha government has made detailed preparations. The state has set up a control room and helplines for visitors, while the Commissionerate Police has taken special measures for the event’s safety. Forty police platoons will be deployed across the city, and approximately 100 Pravasi Mitra (volunteers) will assist with traffic management and crowd control. Additionally, a new mascot, HAPFY, and a chatbot have been introduced to facilitate communication for attendees.
