Prime Minister Modi extended wishes to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on his 91st birthday on Tuesday.
PM Modi conveyed his wishes through a post on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Birthday wishes to former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. I pray for his long life and good health.”
Manmohan Singh, an Indian politician, economist, academician, and bureaucrat, was born in 1932 in Gah, Punjab (now part of Pakistan). He served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014.
Singh, who initially served as the finance minister in PV Narasimha Rao’s government, is widely praised for his pivotal role in the economic liberalization of India in 1991. These reforms opened up the Indian economy to foreign investment, reduced government control, and significantly contributed to the country’s economic growth.
Singh’s initiatives, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), later known as MGNREGA, also had a profound impact on rural employment.

Leaders from across the political spectrum extended their wishes on the 91st birthday of the former Prime Minister.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, while wishing him good health and happiness, underscored his contributions to nation-building and the economic upliftment of the country. He wrote on X, “Former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji’s integrity, unwavering commitment to nation-building, and economic upliftment of the masses will forever be an inspiration to me.”
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge lauded the leader as a rare example of simplicity, dignity, and grace in politics.
“On his birthday, I extend my best wishes to Former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. He is a rare example of simplicity, dignity, and grace in politics, a true statesman Prime Minister whose actions spoke more than his words. We are forever grateful for his tremendous contribution to the nation,” Kharge said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also extended his “warm birthday greetings” to Singh, wishing him good health and a long life.
DMK leader and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, MK Stalin, praised the former Prime Minister on his birthday, acknowledging his leadership during the global financial crisis and his commitment to inclusive policies that reshaped India’s future.
He noted Singh’s composed, intellectual, and humble approach as an example, providing valuable lessons for leadership in every era. Stalin concluded, “His legacy of progress and stability endures. Here’s to more inspiring years!”
Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal praised Singh’s “unwavering dedication and commitment” toward India on his 91st birthday. In a post on X, he wrote, “Birthday greetings to former Prime Minister, Shri Manmohan Singh ji. Your unwavering dedication and commitment to our country, constitution, and democracy continue to inspire us all. Wishing you good health, happiness, and a long life ahead.”
