Bathinda Superintendent of Police (SP) Gurbinder Singh,who was in-charge of Ferozpur when a security breach occurred in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy on January 5, 2022, has been suspended from duty due to “negligence”, reports ANI.

The action was initiated following extensive probe. He was posted as SP Operations at Ferozpur at the time of the incident.

Gurbinder Singh has been suspended due to negligence in duty. At the time of the incident, he was serving as SP Operation in Ferozepur and presently was posted in Bathinda, as per report by Punjab DGP.

During the incident in January 2022, the Prime Minister’s convoy was delayed for 15-20 minutes while enroute Ferozpur, Punjab, due to road blockage by some protesters. The Ministry of Home Affairs classified this as a major security lapse.

Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi was the Chief Minister of Punjab then.

The Supreme Court had formed a committee to investigate the matter, and over 22 months later, action has been initiated against the top cop.

In August, the Supreme Court highlighted that despite adequate available forces during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab on January 5, the Ferozepur SSP failed to fulfil his duties.

A bench comprising Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli mentioned the committee’s report, chaired by former top court judge Justice Indu Malhotra, suggesting the formation of an oversight committee for periodic reviews of the ‘Blue Book’.

The report stated that the Ferozpur SSP failed to maintain law and order, despite having ample available force and being informed two hours prior about the Prime Minister’s route.
