Kerala and Tamil Nadu are bracing for more rains as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded an orange alert in parts of the two states as the intensifying Northeast monsoon brought heavy rainfall in the region.
Additionally, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has issued a weather forecast indicating the likelihood of light to moderate rainfall in Chennai and its neighbouring areas in the coming days.
According to the latest weather bulletin released at 11 am on Wednesday, the forecast predicted the occurrence of moderate thunderstorms, accompanied by lightning and moderate rainfall in isolated pockets within coastal districts of Tamil Nadu. Notable areas include Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. Similar weather patterns are anticipated in other districts like Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Pudukkottai, Puducherry, and Karaikal within the next two hours.
Furthermore, scattered locations across Chennai and various districts including Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipettai, Vellore, Dindigul, Sivagangai, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Tiruvannamalai, Ariyalur, and Ramanathapuram are expected to experience light thunderstorms, lightning, and varying degrees of rainfall, ranging from light to moderate.
Rainfall lashes Chennai
From the onset of Wednesday morning, continuous rainfall has been observed across different parts of Chennai, encompassing areas like Guindy, Egmore, and Ekkatuthangal, as well as in the northern regions, specifically Old Washermenpet, Tondiarpet, Perambur, and Tiruvottriyur.
Some flood-prone areas have reported waterlogging, prompting Greater Chennai Corporation officials to take necessary actions to remove stagnant water. The civic body has been actively updating citizens through social media about measures being implemented to prevent flooding in low-lying regions and addressing citizens’ concerns.
In the last 24 hours, Tiruppur received the highest rainfall of 17 cm, followed by Andipatti in the Madurai district with 14 cm, and Parangipetai in the Cuddalore district with 13 cm.
Schools shut in Puducherry
Due to the anticipated heavy rain, the Puducherry government has taken proactive measures by declaring a holiday for schools in Puducherry and Karaikal areas for Wednesday, in order to ensure the safety of students and residents in light of the weather forecast.
Orange alert in Kerala and Tamil Nadu
An orange alert has been issued in Kerala and Tamil Nadu due to the escalating Northeast monsoon, prompting both state governments to take precautionary measures in response to the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) forecast of heavy rainfall in specific regions.
Kerala is preparing for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall on Wednesday (November 22) and Thursday (November 23), while Tamil Nadu and Puducherry are expected to encounter heavy rainfall on Wednesday (November 22).
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has foreseen intermittent rainfall across more than 10 districts of Tamil Nadu in the upcoming two days. Specifically for Wednesday, many parts of the state are projected to experience light to moderate rainfall.
The IMD bulletin showed that Kerela has experienced substantial rainfall, with Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram districts recording 7 cm and 5 cm of rain, respectively.
