Mumbai’s civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), on Monday announced fresh guidelines to combat air pollution, particularly focusing on dust generated from construction activities and roads.

This move comes in response to growing concerns over deteriorating air quality in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

The new measures mandate stricter regulations for construction sites, including a ban on using wood or similar materials as fuel for cooking and lighting bonfires. The BMC’s Solid Waste Management Department has been instructed to enforce these guidelines effectively.

To ensure adherence, vigilance teams and clean-up marshals will be deployed to monitor construction activities and curb dust emissions. Additionally, assistant engineers and deputy chief supervisors have been directed to take immediate action and strictly follow these regulations.

This latest directive is part of a broader action plan to reduce air pollution, which also addresses both major and minor contributors. The new measures build on the guidelines and best practices issued last year to regulate air pollution, including specific measures for controlling dust at construction sites and roads.

With these proactive steps, the BMC aims to improve air quality in the city and mitigate the impact of construction-related dust, contributing to a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
