Mohan Charan Majhi is all set to become the first Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Minister of Odisha after the chief of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) Naveen Patnaik concluded his 24-year tenure as the Chief Minister of the state following a significant defeat in the State Assembly elections.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday (June 11) revealed that BJP leader Mohan Charan Majhi would assume the role of Odisha’s new chief minister.
Who are Deputy CMs of Odisha?
Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo and Pravati Parida have been designated as the upcoming Deputy Chief Ministers of Odisha. The decisions were finalised during the BJP legislature party meeting, which had Singh and Union Minister Bhupender Yadav in attendance as observers.
In the Odisha Nimapara Assembly constituency, BJP leader Pravati Parida emerged victorious, defeating BJD’s Dillip Kumar Nayak with a margin of 4,588 votes. Securing 78 seats out of the 147-member Assembly, the BJP comfortably clinched a majority. The party, led by Modi, entered the elections without naming a chief ministerial candidate.
Swearing-in ceremony on June 12
Additionally, the swearing-in ceremony for the first BJP government in Odisha is scheduled for June 12. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to grace the swearing-in ceremony which will be held at Janata Maidan in Bhubaneswar. Notably, the BJP has extended an invitation to BJD president and outgoing chief minister Naveen Patnaik to attend the event.
Notably, the first invitation card for the ceremony was presented to Lord Jagannath in Puri. It was ceremoniously delivered to the 12th-century shrine by several newly elected MLAs.
Who is Mohan Charan Majhi?
Mohan Charan Majhi, a revered figure aged 53 and hailing from the tribal community, has established himself as a prominent four-time MLA representing the Keonjhar constituency.
Mohan Charan Majhi secured victory in the Keonjhar seat with an impressive margin of approximately 87,815 votes. His opponent from the constituency, BJD’s Mina Majhi, was defeated in the electoral contest.
His steadfast commitment to public service and exceptional organizational skills have earned him recognition. Majhi’s tenure brings a strong tribal perspective to the forefront of Odisha’s governance.
As a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party, he secured the Keonjhar seat in the 2019 Odisha Legislative Assembly election. Additionally, he served as the representative of Keonjhar thrice between 2000 and 2009.
