A 55-year-old man has been arrested by police for allegedly killing his son-in-law over domestic discord in Maharashtra’s Thane district, an official said on Wednesday.

The body of the victim, aged 38, was found in the Bhatsa River on March 1, following which a case of accidental death was initially filed, according to Kulgaon’s assistant police inspector, Govind Patil, PTI reported.

During the investigation, based on the complaint filed by the victim’s brother, the police learned that the deceased used to have frequent quarrels with his wife, to which the woman’s father had objected.

The deceased’s father-in-law had also attempted to mediate the issues between the couple, however, he failed to do so.

The incident took place on February 29, when the accused took his son-in-law to a bridge over the Bhatsa river on the Kulgaon-Murbad road in Moryacha Pada village and allegedly pushed him into the water below, as per the official report.

The victim’s head struck a large stone in the river, resulting in immediate death, according to the official statement. Subsequently, the body was recovered and transported to a government hospital for post-mortem examination.

Following an investigation based on the complaint, the police filed a murder case and arrested the accused on Tuesday, an official said.
