Junior doctors in West Bengal have appealed to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking their intervention in the ongoing impasse surrounding the rape and murder of a fellow doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front sent a four-page letter, with copies also addressed to Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankar and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda.

The tragic incident occurred on August 9, when a post-graduate trainee at the State-run hospital was raped and murdered. Since then, junior doctors have been on strike, demanding justice.

In their letter, the doctors wrote: “We humbly present this matter before Your Excellency, as the head of state, so that justice is served for our unfortunate colleague who was a victim of a heinous crime. We, as healthcare professionals under the West Bengal Health Department, seek your intervention to ensure we can continue our duties without fear.”

They added that presidential intervention would “serve as a beacon of hope” during these challenging times.

Aniket Mahato, one of the protesting doctors, confirmed to PTI that the letter had been drafted earlier this month and was dispatched Thursday night.
