The former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, along with three others, has been placed in 8-day police custody following an order by the Alipore Judges Court in Kolkata. The next hearing is scheduled for September 10.
Ghosh was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on September 2 in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the college. The CBI had been investigating Ghosh for financial misconduct during his tenure as principal from 2021 until he resigned, citing “moral responsibility” for the 31-year-old doctor’s death.
The arrest follows two weeks of continuous questioning by the CBI regarding both the murder case and a separate investigation into financial irregularities and corruption.
Along with Ghosh, three other individuals have been arrested: vendors Biplav Singha and Suman Hazara, who supplied medicine to the hospital, and Afsar Ali, a security guard.
Ghosh faces accusations of misusing government funds, illegally distributing assets, awarding contracts to ineligible bidders, and violating financial regulations. The former deputy superintendent of the hospital also alleged that Ghosh unlawfully sold hazardous biomedical waste and misappropriated COVID-19 funds to create a gym and renovate office spaces.
