According to media reports, a scientific investigation is scheduled for today to identify the cause of the accident.

The safety standards in factories across India have been a cause of concern for a long time. Last month, seven people had lost their lives at a factory blast in West Bengal.

A powerful explosion occurred at an illegal firecracker factory in Duttapukur area of West Bengal which is densely populated. The explosion killed seven people inside a two-storey building. The building’s owner, Sheikh Samsul Ali ran the operation illegally within the building.

There were no women and children among the deceased and five others could not be identified as the bodies were charred and mutilated. Nine injured were rushed to the Barasat district hospital. The blast partially demolished three nearby buildings and badly damaged three others.

The NIA has been probing two explosions that occurred in 2021 in West Bengal. The state has witnessed several similar incidents in recent years, many of which occurred in illegal factories being operated from residential buildings. There has been a crackdown on illegal factories that has lead to several arrests and seizure of goods being manufactured in these illegal factories.
