Just weeks after college student Neha Hiremath was stabbed to death by her former classmate, a 21-year-old woman was murdered on Wednesday inside her house by an acquaintance in Hubbali district of Karnataka for allegedly rejecting his love proposal.

The accused was identified as 23-year-old Girish Sawant, and the deceased was Anjali Ambigera, a resident of Veerapur Oni area.

According to police, Girish knocked at the door of Anjali at around 5.45 pm, and when she opened the door, he stabbed her with a knife and fled.

Her sister stood as a witness to the murder.

Police said that a case has been registered under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code, and teams have been formed to nab Girish.

Speaking to reporters, Anjali’s sister Yashodha said, “Girish was harassing my sister Anjali for sometime now. He expressed his love to her but my sister declined. He even pressured my sister to go with him to Mysuru. He had also threatened her that she will meet the same fate as that of Neha Hiremath.”

Neha, 23, was stabbed to death inside her college campus by her former classmate Fayaz Khoddunaik inside her college premises in Hubbali district on April 18.

Yashoda further alleged that the family had approached the police, who didn’t take the matter seriously.

Meanwhile, Anjali’s family and local residents staged a protest demanding strict action against the accused. Later, the police reached the spot and dispersed them, assuring them that justice will be delivered.

Meanwhile, Congress Councillor Niranjan Hiremath — father of Neha — met the deceased’s family and slammed the state government over the “deteriorating” law and order situation in north Karnataka and also sought suspension of Police Commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad Renuka Sukumar for alleged “failure”, reports PTI.
