A day after the murder of a 21-year-old woman at her residence in Hubballi, Karnataka, police arrested the accused Girish, alias Vishwa, on Thursday. He had been on the run after stabbing the woman to death, ANI reported.
According to police officials, Bendigeri Police Station Inspector Chandrappa Chickkodi and woman police constable Rekha Havreddi have been suspended on charges of dereliction of duty.
Prior to the incident, the victim, named Anjali, had sought help from the Bendigeri Police Station regarding the accused. However, instead of assisting her, the police sent her away.
Anjali reportedly turned down Girish’s marriage proposal, upon which Girish allegedly threatened to kill Anjali in a similar manner to a 23-year-old college student, Neha Hiremath from Hubballi, who was fatally stabbed by her former classmate.
Girish forcibly entered Anjali’s home early on Wednesday, stabbed her multiple times, and then fled the scene. The incident sparked outrage among locals, leading to protests demanding justice for the victim.
Hubbali Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar mentioned that two police officers were suspended for neglecting their duties when Anjali sought their help to file a complaint about the threats made by the accused. Anjali’s family demanded legal action against the accused and sought assistance from the district administration.

Sukumar claimed that the police initiated an investigation into the incident and took action against the accused based on complaints from the victim’s sisters.
In April, Neha Hiremath was allegedly stabbed to death by her former classmate, Fayaz Khodunaik, at KLE Technological University in Hubballi Dharwad, where she was a first-year MCA student.
Fayaz was swiftly apprehended by the police and brought before a magistrate, who remanded him to 14-day judicial custody. The CID took over the case, and Fayaz was later transferred from Dharwad to Hubballi for further proceedings.
