The Karnataka government has officially approved a Rs 4 per litre increase in milk prices, effective from April 1. The decision, announced by Animal Husbandry and Sericulture Minister K. Venkatesh on Thursday, March 27, follows persistent demands from farmers, various organisations, and the Department of Animal Husbandry.

With this revision, the price of the one-litre blue packet of Nandini milk will rise from Rs 44 to Rs 48. The price hike is expected to provide significant financial relief to dairy farmers who have long sought better remuneration for their produce.

The move was finalised after extensive deliberations within the Karnataka Cabinet. Earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had indicated that any price increase would be contingent on ensuring that the additional revenue directly benefited dairy farmers. Despite his initial resistance to the hike, he later assured the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) that the cabinet would soon reach a decision.

Milk federations across the state have welcomed the price hike, viewing it as a step towards improving the financial well-being of farmers. This decision aligns with the government’s commitment to supporting the agricultural sector and addressing the growing concerns of those dependent on dairy farming for their livelihood.
