A video of the incident that surfaced on social media showed a man throwing a bicycle at students, on the other hand, students were seen punching and thrashing each other.
Other purported videos of the clash also showed individuals being mobbed and beaten up by a group, even as security personnel of the university tried to rescue them. Students from both the ABVP and Left groups have lodged police complaints against each other.
Earlier on February 9, a similar incident was reported where a scuffle broke out late at night between students affiliated with the ABVP and Left-associated groups, including the AISA and the Democratic Students Federation (DSF), among others.
Both sides claimed several injuries in the melee, which occurred during the University General Body Meeting (UGBM) held at the Sabarmati Dhaba on campus. The meeting aimed to elect members of the election commission for the 2024 Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) polls.
