The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain across several parts of Telangana on Tuesday. In its latest bulletin, IMD has issued an orange alert for 18 districts and a yellow alert for 12 others, including Hyderabad.
Where could it rain heavily?
The orange alert, which signals intense rainfall, has been issued for districts like Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar, Warangal, and Siddipet, among others. The yellow alert, which suggests the chance of moderate to heavy showers, is in place for areas like Hyderabad, Khammam, Nalgonda, Medchal Malkajgiri, and Mahabubnagar.
The weather office has also warned of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds across all 33 districts of Telangana.
Hyderabad braces for rain
For Hyderabad, IMD has forecast cloudy skies with moderate to heavy showers likely by evening or night. Some areas may witness intense spells. The temperature is expected to hover around 31°C during the day and 23°C at night.
IMD has also signaled the possibility of one or two heavy spells starting late afternoon, especially during the night and early morning. Low-lying areas in the city are at risk of urban flooding.
In the northern and western parts of Telangana, heavy showers are likely to begin by late afternoon and continue into Tuesday morning. Commuters and farmers in these areas have been advised to remain alert due to localized flooding and intense downpours.
Monday’s rain disrupts Hyderabad
Several parts of Hyderabad, including Rajendranagar, Shivarampalle, Katedan and Chandrayangutta, witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday, leading to waterlogging and traffic jams.
Flooding was reported at Durganagar, Zoo Park and near Aramghar underpasses. Monsoon emergency teams were rushed in to drain water and clear traffic, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle.
Government steps in
Telangana Chief Minister held a review meeting with officials on Monday. He instructed all district authorities to stay alert 24×7 during the rainy season. Emergency teams from GHMC, police, SDRF, and HYDRAA have been put on standby in flood-prone zones of Hyderabad. Medical teams have also been deployed to tribal regions to tackle potential rain-related diseases.
The CM directed district collectors to closely track IMD updates and alert villagers and farmers at least three hours in advance in case of heavy rainfall warnings.
Despite a 21% rainfall deficit since June, the CM noted the recent showers were much needed and offered some relief, according to a statement from his office.
