An Air India flight crashed minutes after taking off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon — with ‘many’ feared dead. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a residential area with 242 people of varying nationalities on board. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has since described the plane crash as “heartbreaking beyond words” and continues to monitor the ongoing rescue efforts.

“The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected,” he wrote on X.

Modi had also taken stock of the incident soon after the crash — speaking to both Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu and Home Minister Amit Shah. Officials said the PM had asked both Shah and Naidu to go to Ahmedabad and ensure all possible assistance is extended to those affected in the wake of the air mishap.
