When wide roads are filled with traffic, lofty buildings tower on your head and people are seen running with their bagpacks towards those plush offices, you know you are in ‘Millenium City’ Gurgaon, sorry Gurugram now. On Tuesday, Gurgaon was renamed as Gurugram by the Haryana government.The decision was announced by Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, along with the rechristening of Mewat, which will now be called Nuh.
Legend has it that the Gurugram land was owned by the Pandavas and Kauravas and was gifted to Guru Dronacharya as a token of appreciation for training them. However, over the course of time, the name got distorted to Gurgaon. An official spokesman said the decision to change the name was taken on the basis of the representations received in several fora that it would be appropriate to rename Gurgaon as ‘Gurugram’.
