A man was arrested for allegedly sending an e-mail threatening an attack on the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad. The arrest was made by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch.

The accused, a native of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested from Gujarat’s Rajkot city, where he stayed.

An official told news agency PTI that the accused had issued a brief mail from his phone which had his name, adding that he has no criminal background.

The Narendra Modi stadium is one of the venues of the ongoing cricket World Cup, and the India-Pakistan match will be held on October 14 at the stadium.

The Ahmedabad police said that stringent security arrangements have been made for the India-Pakistan World Cup cricket match. More than 11,000 personnel of various agencies including Gujarat Police, NSG, RAF, and home guards among others will be deployed in Ahmedabad for the match.

Earlier, on Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) had received an e-mail threatening to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi and blow up the stadium in Ahmedabad, following which security was beefed up.

The e-mail also mentioned that it wanted the release of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and demanded Rs 500 crore from the government.

The email read, “Tumhari sarkar se hume 500 crore aur Lawrence bishnoi chahiye nahi to kal hum Narendra Modi ke sath narendra Modi stadium bhi uda denge. Hindustan me sabkuch bikta hai to humne bhi kuch kharid liya hai kitna bhi sequre karlo humse nahi bacha paoge agar baat karni hai to is mail par hi bat karna. (We will blow up Narendra Modi and the Narendra Modi stadium if the government does not give us Rs 500 crore and Lawrence Bishnoi. Everything sells in Hindustan, so we too have bought something. No matter how much you secure, you won’t be able to remain safe from us. If you wish to talk, do so on this email).”
