Sawant will succeed Manohar Parrikar who passed away on Sunday evening after battling a prolonged illness. He was 63. The Goa CM was suffering from a pancreatic ailment for quite a long time.
He was cremated with full state honours at 5 pm at Miramar beach next to the memorial of Goa’s first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar who was also cremated here.

BJP president Amit Shah is currently meeting legislators of the state to decide on next Goa CM. It was reported that the saffron party not been able to convince its alliance partners the Goa Forward Party (GFP), the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and Independents on naming the successor of Manohar Parrikar.

Manohar Parrikar was born on December 13, 1955 at Mapusa, Goa. He was educated at Loyola School, Margao and later graduated in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai in 1978. Before entering politics, Parrikar had joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh at a young age and became a Mukhya Shikshak (Chief Instructor) in the final years of his schooling itself. After graduating from IIT, he resumed RSS work in Mapusa and became a Sanghchalak at the age of 26.
As a member of the BJP, Parrikar was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Goa in 1994. He became the Chief Minister of Goa for the first time on October 24, 2000 and continued till February 27, 2002. He was re-elected as Chief Minister on June 3, 2002 and served till February 2, 2005. He became Chief Minister of Goa for the third time on March 9, 2012 and continued till November 8, 2014. A day later, Parrikar became Union Minister of Defence and continued till March 13, 2017. He was again sworn in as Chief Minister of Goa on March 14, 2017.

A day after Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's death, Congress MLAs met Governor Mridula Sinha on Monday and staked claim to form government in the coastal state.
All the 14 Congress MLAs, led by Leader of the Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, went to Raj Bhawan and handed over a letter to Sinha, saying it was the single largest party in the Assembly and should be allowed to form the government.

Goa BJP president Vinay Tendulkar said there would be clarity on who would be the state's new chief minister by 2 pm Monday. Tendulkar said this after meeting Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari at a hotel near here over the issue. "The decision on chief ministerial candidate is yet to be taken. But the picture will be clear by 2 pm," Tendulkar said, adding that the new chief minister would be sworn in after 3 pm Monday.

Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar told PTI that all 14 Congress MLAs in Goa to meet Governor Mridula Sinha to stake claim to form government. This would be the third time in last 48 hours when the Congress would stake the claim to form government.
BJP MLA Glenn Ticlo said that decision on next CM would be announced soon. "Definitely, among the 12 of us BJP MLAs should lead the state, it is but obvious," he said.
