In a dramatic turn of events within Bihar’s influential political family, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav has expelled his elder son, Tej Pratap Yadav, from both the party and the family. The decision, which has triggered a storm of reactions, was strongly backed by Lalu’s daughter and RJD leader Rohini Acharya.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Rohini expressed her unwavering support for her father’s decision. “Those who abandon their wisdom and repeatedly cross the limits of decent conduct and family prestige make themselves the subject of criticism,” she wrote. She also reaffirmed her loyalty to Lalu Prasad and the values he upholds, calling him “like God” and adding that the family and the party are sacred institutions that must not be tarnished.

The controversy erupted after Lalu Yadav issued a public statement on X, announcing Tej Pratap’s six-year expulsion from the party and cutting him off from the family. He cited Tej Pratap’s behaviour as inconsistent with the family’s traditions and the moral standards expected in public life. “Neglecting moral values in personal life weakens our collective struggle for social justice,” Lalu said.

Tejashwi Yadav, Lalu’s younger son and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister, termed the situation “unfortunate” but maintained that it was a personal matter. “He [Tej Pratap] is an adult and has the right to make personal decisions. Our party chief has made his feelings clear,” Tejashwi told reporters.

The family feud came into public view after a post from Tej Pratap’s Facebook account claimed he had been in a long-term relationship. He later alleged that his account had been hacked and some photos were edited with malicious intent. The controversy revived memories of his troubled marriage with Aishwarya Rai, the granddaughter of former Bihar CM Daroga Rai.

With the Bihar Assembly elections scheduled later this year, the public fallout in the Yadav family is expected to have political implications for the RJD.
