As many as six people were killed and 48 injured as a major fire broke out at a chemical factory in Thane’s Dombivli near Mumbai, Maharashtra, after a boiler blasted on Thursday afternoon.

The fire occurred after a boiler inside the Amber chemical factory located in MIDC Phase 2 exploded. Officials said that the number of injured may go up as many workers and residents are still feared trapped. The injured have been rushed to Neptune Hospital and AIMS hospital in MIDC, reports The Indian Express.

A local said that the sound of the explosion reached as far as three kilometers away from the blast site. The fire spread to nearby factories and the entire area is being evacuated.

Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) officials said that said blast took place at around 1.30 pm. The sound of the blast was heard in a radius of 2 km and the glass of nearby houses in the building broke following the explosion.

Visuals from the incident site showed huge plumes of smoke coming out from the factory where the fire started. According to sources, four to five workers got injured in the incident, however, no casualties have been reported so far.

Over 10 fire engines have been pressed into action to control the blaze.
